2ALC Launches Amicus Campaign to Support State's Overly Restrictive Bans

The Second Amendment Law Center is hard at work coordinating an amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefing campaign to support the plaintiffs in the case known as National for Gun Rights v. Lamont, a challenge to Connecticut’s bans on semi-automatic firearms (so-called “assault weapons”) and standard-capacity magazines. Briefs are due in the next few months.

Amicus briefs are essential in cases like this because the attorneys for the parties in a case are not allowed to fund or participate in writing amicus briefs, and because court-imposed page limitations stop the parties from being able to fully cover all of the legal issues involved. Second Amendment Law Center attorneys bring expertise and experience to the arguments being made in the case so that all the issues can be presented to the court. Well written amicus briefs can make the difference between winning and losing a case..

Recently, 2ALC coordinated similar amicus brief campaigns in Illinois, Delaware, California, and several other states. that passed laws banning commonly possessed semi-automatic firearms and standard capacity magazines, 2ALC also has briefing ongoing in Hawaii and New jersey over their bans on possessing firearms in most places in those states, even with a permit to carry.. Currently, 2ALC is also working to support lawsuits challenging unconstitutional gun bans in Oregon, Washington, Washington D.C., and other jurisdictions hostile to 2A rights.

The gun ban lobby pushes these laws, and helps states defend them in court. These groups always submits amicus briefs in 2A cases. Billionaire Michael Bloomberg and others financially support anti-gun-owner groups, and these groups routinely submit amicus briefs supporting unconstitutional laws. This makes 2ALC’s amicus brief campaigns critical to success. help us make the difference!
